Amsterdam Psy-trance party

August 25th 2001

I didn't intend to go to this, I should have been at the 2001 Dutch tek party and had gone to stay with Hugh who lives in Amsterdam. In the event, just before we got to the tek cite (just north of Breda) the police had started to shut it down. We got as far as the police blockade and it was clear we weren't getting in.

After hanging around in a pub car park with a few other refugees from the teknoval eventually the police turned up to throw us off, we headed to what we'd been told was the replacement tek site at hooke van Holland, but all we found there was an empty beach.

So we decided to head back to Amsterdam, where we knew there would be a party, and so there was. It took place north of the river - not far from the campsite where I've mispent quite a few summer holidays in the past - on the site of an old factory, long demolished.

The whole site was covered in the fine sand which is everywhere in Amsterdam, being so dry it was kicked up as fine dust by the dancing and everyone got very messy as a result.

Amsterdam is well known for its relaxed attitude to drugs and the effect of this was easy to see. Indeed, the first thing to catch my eye was a light on the dancefloor, just a 60w light bulb inside a little white tent. It was here the dealer worked from, quite a difference to British parties where these things go on in the dark corners, here, if you wanted Ecstasy or LSD, you went to the light and there it was. If you wanted anything else though (apart from cannabis which doesn't count and was sold at the cafe bar), you were out of luck. From what I could see there was only the one dealer at this party and no zombies.

I like psy-trance, but this party took a little time to get going, the music at first was a little weak but it got going and by the early hours was really kicking.

The people I went with left in the early morning but I stayed until afternoon when it closed up. When I got back to the flat I was ordered straight into the shower, I didn't really need ordering!
