I’ve been meaning to start a blog for some time, so here goes.
I wanted to publish a blog because over the years I’ve been involved with several campaigns and other social-political issues, things which seemed simple at the start, but which all developed layers of complexity once I got into it. The internet is all about sharing information, creating debate and challenging views, so yeah, there’s a lot to say, it’s time to stick my oar in.
The problem is some very important issues have been dominated by those spreading fake news and simplistically wrong claims designed to distract. Conspiracy theories are perhaps the worst offenders, they’re designed not only to undermine essential developments but also to distract from real issues.
The main origin for this rubbish has been social media, massively influential outfits like Facebook and Twitter (now called X) and the like. They are, of course, American owned and designed to spread the views of a super rich elite and, not to beat about the bush, a form of neofascism..
I especially really object to the simplistic idea of *us” and “them”, that there is only “left” and “right” wing politics, in truth it’s way more complex that that because people and society are way more complex. That’s why we need democracy, but democracy can only work if the population is aware of the issues and has access to the full range of views and opinions presented as just that. But just as important that when their final decision is made, it’s properly reflected in a representative election result. I will say now that our system of voting “first past the post”, is not democratic and for that reason, the UK is not really a democracy.
So what are these things I think are so important? Without going into any details here – that’s what the blogs will do – expect musings on such things as if freedom is so important, what does it really mean? Why the the war on drugs is based on a lie – where “control” does not mean what you think it does. And of course, the reason we’ve spent the past 60 years or so destroying our towns and cities.
Ah yes, remember progress? It’s was something they told us we couldn’t stand in the way of a few years ago, look where that led us. Perhaps more importantly, what we can do to end this madness?
